16th May 2009 Competition Report & Results

There were five students from Bulldog School participating in the latest Impact competition - four juniors under 13 years old and one senior:

Jennifer Tu - Red Belt (-13)

James Nguyen - Blue Belt (-13)

Samir Amin - Yellow Belt (-13)

Benjamin Tran - Yellow Belt (-13)

Glyn Robbins - Green Belt (35+)

There were impressive performances in patterns from Glyn and Ben at their first competition. Both were up against strong opponents and both lost by one vote. Though I do stand by my opinion that Ben should have gone through to the next round. Well decision was made and he lost to the eventual silver medallist.

Glyn made a couple of silly mistakes and still managed to take two votes out of five against a female competitor who looked pretty strong technically. Never mind, I know now that he CAN do nice sine wave!  Both - Glyn and Ben - put in a great deal of work and preparation, brought their patterns up to a good competitive level in just few weeks and proved that they can perform very well under pressure.

James performed a nice pattern but it was not enough and he lost to a very loud opponent :). Again I do believe that he should have gone through to the next round, though I must  say that he made one big technical mistake and his side kicks could be better. Seeing James performing at previous competitions, he always steps up after the first round. Unfortunately, he did not have such opportunity this time. That will teach him to do his best from the first time!

Samir lost in the final - excellent first part of Do-San, terrible second part... so no argument there!

Very good performance from Jennifer - she deserved her Champion title.

In sparring there was a slow start for Samir but he was lucky enough to get through to the next round. This was followed by very good performance in the next two rounds - nice foot work. He drew in the final and it went to extra time. It was close fight but the decision went to his opponent.

Glyn got too friendly with everyone from his division before fighting (big mistake!) and did not fight aggressively enough. He lost to a tall blue belt but quite easily beat a shorter yellow belt to claim silver.

I did not see others' sparring and special techniques so cannot comment on those.

As for power test - I forgot to tell Glyn that he was supposed to break boards, not the holder! :)

Results:

Jennifer Tu - GOLD in patterns, GOLD in special techniques, BRONZE in sparring

Samir Amin - SILVER in patterns, SILVER in sparring, BRONZE in special technique

Glyn Robbins - SILVER in sparring

Well done to all! Photos

James Nguyen BRONZE in Green belts Low category Patterns

James moved up to a higher category in Special Techniques and even though he could still comfortably perform a flying side kick the new height for a high kick was a bit out of reach for him.

In Sparring James won his first round and lost the second round to Louis Griffiths, the eventual winner of the category.

ITF England 2007 Championships Results

Jennifer Tu - Champion Under 13 Yellow/Green Belt Patterns and Silver Medallist Pee-Wee Sparring (though I have seen the video of her final fight with the green belt male competitor and I don't think she lost it - all her kicks were strong and well on target, unlike her opponent's multiple kicks, but for some reason she decided not to move and therefore made it look untidy and a bit messy with hands)

IIC in Belgium

Report by Elena Shutova and Jennifer Pea

The most important thing we learnt from the International Instructors Course in Belgium was NEVER DRIVE IN BRUSSELS WITHOUT A MAP OR GPS. Apparently, all the roads in Belgium lead to Brussels and NONE goes out.... ever seen Ground Dog Day movie? - well that what happens when you drive on the RING road... and if you get desperate do not bother asking the locals for directions - they will send you the wrong way... well we also learnt some TaeKwon-Do technical stuff :)
