Bulldog Taekwon-Do School DO - The Art of Life |

| Home |
DO is an important part of Taekwon-Do, it is more important than physical part of students' development. It literally means 'the way' or 'the art'. It is not merely 'the way of foot and hand' but 'the way of life'. It takes longer to learn the 'Do' part than the 'Taekwon' part of the art - it takes the whole life. The more you develop your physical strength the more you need to balance it with your mental strength and learn how to control and to use it. You learn the 'Do' through your experiences, with the guidance of your teacher or Master, from your parents, your friends and other people around you. You learn it from teaching and helping others. You learn it from getting hurt and from inflicting pain. You learn it from loosing and from winning. It requires self-discipline, self-motivation, self-control, self-respect and humility to go through all the experiences, bad and good, and not to give up. Training in Taekwon-Do you have opportunity to experience many more things than you would have normally done in your daily life. You put yourself through hard disciplined training sessions and find that you enjoy the hard work. You train your body and mind to be stronger so you can take up new challenges in life. You get opportunity to meet people from all over the world and learn and share their cultures. You can test your physical skills and mental strength in a friendly setting of competitions. You get the chance to be trained by Masters who have been practicing the art for 50 or more years and who never stop learning and developing themselves. You get to teach others and help them get through difficult times. All this contributes to what you become. We decided to dedicate this page to quotes, sayings, proverbs, personal discussions and articles that may help us to educate ourselves about the world. If you would like to publish anything please send an email to bulldog@tkdimpact.com We will start with the Tenets of Taekwondo-Do and quotes of some notable individuals who put in worlds what we all know, or should know, by heart. What is a 'Tenet'? A tenet is a belief or a principle by which we should aim to achieve and live by. The tenets of Taekwon-Do should serve as a guide for all serious students of the art. Taekwon-Do is not just physical training; it involves mental and spiritual training as well. Taekwon-Do has moral culture, which builds character and teaches students to become ethical. Here are some quotes, proverbs, sayings that may help you understand tenets of TKD better. Theme: Courtesy “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and the strong. Because someday in life you will have been all of these.” “What you do not like when done to yourself, do not do to others.” “Courteous men can learn courtesy from the discourteous.” “Good manners have much to do with the emotions. To make them ring true, one must feel them, not merely exhibit them.” “There is no outward sign of true courtesy that does not rest on a deep moral foundation.” “Courtesy is a science of the highest importance. It is... opening a door that we may derive instruction from the example of others, and at the same time enabling us to benefit them by our example, if there be anything in our character worthy of imitation.” “The small courtesies sweeten life; the greater ennoble it.” “Nothing is ever lost by courtesy. It is the cheapest of the pleasures costs nothing and conveys much. It pleases him who gives and him who receives, and thus, like mercy, it is twice blessed.” “Courtesies cannot be borrowed like snow shovels; you must have some of your own.” “Courtesies of a small and trivial character are the ones which strike deepest in the grateful and appreciating heart.” “If a man be gracious and courteous to strangers, it shows he is a citizen of the world, and that his heart is no island cut off from other lands, but a continent that joins to them.” “All doors open to courtesy.” “Life is not so short but that there is always time for courtesy.” “Courtesy is the one coin you can never have too much of or be stingy with.” “Gratitude is the most exquisite form of courtesy.” Theme: Integrity “Rather fall with honor than succeed by fraud.” “Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with the important matters.” It can take years to gain one’s trust but it may take seconds to lose it. Theme: Perseverance “Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them: A desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, and they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.” “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Theme: Self Control "Warriors take chances. Like everyone else, they fear failing, but they refuse to let fear control them." “The highest form of fighting is to fight without fighting.” Theme: Courage, Indomitable Spirit and Character “The ultimate test of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and moments of convenience, but where he stands in moments of challenge and moments of controversy.” Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.” “If all the arrows are shot down and if the blade of your sword is broken, then take your spirit and your heart... and win .” “Do your best, being the best among the best.” “Ability can take you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.” “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.” Know where you are going. Trust yourself. Don't be what they want you to be. You are free to be whatever you want to be. Theme: Leadership, Humility, Attitude and Respect “A leader is one who makes us feel bigger when we are with him.” “Setting a good example saves you the trouble of giving orders to your men.” “To be respected, the authority must be respectable. ” “The nobleman bows but do not bend.” Theme: Philosophy of life and wisdom “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” “What we know is a drop; what we don't, an ocean.” “We learn that real life is here and now. The past is already over and the future is still not here. Only in the present moment can you really feel alive.” “It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.” “There is no way to peace — peace is the way.” “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." “A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life” “Age is whatever you think it is. You are as old as you think you are.” “People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centred; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful you will win some false friends and true enemies; Succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your consciousness, it was never between you and them anyway.” Do not try to teach the truth based on someone else’s experiences, you can never fully understand it; teach what you know from your own experiences, only then you will teach the truth.
